Can I change the course menu?

Yes, you can. You can add, remove, reorder, and rename items on the course menu. For example, to rename an item on the course menu, follow these steps:

  1. Hover your mouse over the course menu item you would like to change.
  2. Click on the downward arrow that appears to the right of the item name.
  3. Click on Rename link.
  4. In the provided field, type the new name of the menu item, and click the green check or hit Enter on your keyboard.

How do I upload course materials?

There are a number of different ways to add materials to a Blackboard course. But, most of the time, adding a Content Item will suit your needs. To create a Content Item, follow these steps:

  1. On your course menu, click on any of the Content Areas (e.g., Syllabus).
  2. On the Content Area page, hover over Build Content, then click on Item under Create.
  3. On the resulting form, Name your item and proceed to the Content Editor window. 
  4. Within the Content Editor, author your material or paste from another source.
  5. Optionally, attach files or media.
  6. Click Submit.

Can I copy and paste from Word or another resource?

Pasting text into the content editor using a right-click of the mouse results in a message alerting you that your browser does not support this behavior. You are still able to copy and paste using the keyboard shortcuts instead.

Copy: Control + C / Command + C; Cut: Control + X / Command + X; Paste: Control + V / Command + V  (Commands are for PC/Mac)
 
 

Can I embed videos into my course?

Yes, you can. From within the Content Editor when you create a Content Item, you can embed MPEG, MOV, and Flash video content. You also can embed videos from YouTube using the YouTube Mashup tool. As an example, to embed a video file you have on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. On your course menu, click on any of the Content Areas (e.g., Syllabus).
  2. On the Content Area page, hover over Build Content, then click on Item under Create.
  3. On the resulting form, Name your item and proceed to the Content Editor window. 
  4. On the third row of the Content Editor tools, click on the MPEG/AVI button, the MOV button, or the Flash button.
  5. Browse your local computer for the related media file, double click the file name.
  6. Provide for alternate display size, and ALT text, then click Submit.
  7. Once back on the original form, click Submit.

Can I restrict access to certain materials?

Yes, you can. For any type of material within your Blackboard course, you may provide a range of restriction levels. The lowest of these levels is Date/Time restriction, and the highest level of restriction involves Adaptive Release Rules. If you would like to keep restriction simple with a Date/Time restriction on a Content Item, follow these steps:

  1. On your course menu, click on any of the Content Areas (e.g., Syllabus).
  2. On the Content Area page, hover over a Content Item you have already created, click the downward arrow that appears to the right, then click Edit OR, to create a new item...
  3. On the Content Area page, hover over Build Content, then click on Item under Create.
  4. On the resulting form, Name your item and proceed to the Content Editor window. 
  5. Within the Content Editor, author your material.
  6. In section 3 of this form, choose Yes to make the item available, then check off and select Display After and/or Display Until dates and times.
  7. Click Submit.

Can I copy course materials to next semester's course?

Yes, you can. You may copy parts of the whole or you may copy the entire set of course materials, assessments, and grading structures. In order to engage a Course Copy, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your ORIGIN course, the course FROM which you want to copy.
  2. Beneath the course menu, within the Control Panel, click on Packages and Utilities.
  3. Within the options that appear, click on Course Copy.
  4. On the resulting form, click Browse next to Destination Course ID.
  5. Locate the course INTO which you want to copy, click to fill in the bubble to the left of the Course Name, then click Submit.
  6. Back on the Course Copy form, either choose to Select All, or check off materials, etc. you want to copy.
  7. Click Submit.

What does “The content below is outside of the Blackboard Learn environment” mean?

Clicking a link to an outside website or resource that is set to open within Blackboard will result in a message stating, “The content below is outside the Blackboard Learn environment.”

To avoid this, set external links to Open in a New Window.
